Manchester Psych Festival 2024

Venue:Projekts MCR Skatepark, MMU The Union, Yes, Deaf Institute, Gorilla

Date:31/08/2024

La Luz

Projekts MCR Skatepark

The first venue I went to today was underneath the Mancunian way (A57). It might seem like a strange music venue but the stage was inside of a skate park. This is the first time the festival has done an outdoor venue and it worked great.

The band is a modern take on Psych with lots of retro keys, a mix of jangly guitars, wa-wah tones and harmonising vocals.

Check out strange world from the new album News of the Universe

Voka Gentle

Yes: Basement

A last minute addition to my list of bands I wanted to see today:

I'm glad I did as they were one of the best I saw. Kinda hard to categorise into a genre so I'd go for experimental-pop?

Sometimes nice floaty vocals and spacey synths, sometimes aggressive guitar riffs. All three members of the band were on vocal duties. They had their sliders set to maximum wonk.

If you are in the market for a bop, take a look at 1000 opera singers working in starbucks

Pastel

MMU The Union

Heavily leaning into the Madchester sound of the 90's, but bring all the best bits of those bands into a new psych groove.

Fun sounds - reminds me of going to the corner shop and buying ice pops.

Wax Head

The Deaf Institute

Garage Psych, Loud as fuck. Most songs were about 2 mins long but they manage to include some moments of brief respite with some slow bass grooves.

Have a listen to Jaws Wired Shut

Hello Mary

Yes: Basement

A Trio from New York. A wall of noisy guitars and grungy vibes. Some screamy vocals thrown in as well.

My Fav track from them is 0%

Geordie Greep

Gorilla

After the strange break up of black midi (The news of this was delivered by a Instagram live message. when asked about Geordie's previous band, the reply was "Its iver"). So Geordie Greep is back with a new band and a 'New Sound'

The new sound has some similarities with black midi, long fast vocal passages but a less heavy approach on guitars and bass.

There is a lot more guitar noodling which lost me a bit. I'll give the album a listen when it comes out in October 24. Overall it was just ok but hopefully this is just a 'room to expand musically' phase.
