Manchester Psych Festival 2023

Venue:Ritz Basement, Albert Hall, Yes, Canvas

Date:02/09/2023

Atmos Bloom

Ritz Basement

This was the first band I saw today in the Ritz Basement. They had a dreampop sound similar to Cocteau twins. Soft vocals mixed with jangley guitar and delicate drumming. Good music for petting cats to. I thought they were great! And would defo see them again.

Teke :: Teke

Manchester Academy 2

A Japanese psych rock band from Montreal Very energetic and animated lead singer with support from flutes, trumpets, and bagpipes. This was a mesh of traditional Japanese music and 60's psych. They sounded better live than on record and were one of my favourite bands of the day.

'Teke Teke' is a Japanese urban legend in which a school girl was cut in half when she fell onto the train tracks. Now she is a vengeful spirit who lingers in train stations. Luckily there was a train strike on today so I managed to avoid any ghouls in and around Piccadilly.

Allah-Las

Albert Hall

I missed a bit of this set as I had to queue to get into the Albert Hall as it was one of the bigger venues at the festival. The band had landed on the stage through some psychedelic portal from the 1960's wearing denim and sunglasses. Chilled out bluesy rock with an old school feel.

Los Bitchos

Albert Hall

I have been wanting to see Los Bitchos for a while and finally got to see them. They have insanely catchy riffs that even if you've never heard the song before you feel like you already know it. The guitar stopped working at one point and while the tech tried to fix it the band carried on. When they finally fixed it and played the riff into the chorus I think the whole of the Albert Hall was lifted into the air.

A mostly instrumental band but they managed to instigate some fun crowd participation along to the south Americas influenced guitar pop. Impossible not to bop to.

Just Mustard

YES Pink Room

My highlight from the day was Just Mustard who was another band I'd wanted to see for ages. Trip hop/shoegaze, spooky repetitive vocals against a crushing bassy wall of noise.

Maruja

Canvas

A band I've seen before earlier on in the year and missed at last year's psych fest. This was a great end to the festival. Saxophone led hooks which descend into chaos and massive breakdowns. Thunder was a highlight
